The opening voiceover is quite bleak (so, Catherine is dead, too? What happened to her? Unless you read the books, I guess you don't get to know). Then you meet "Yeesha," who is nothing like the chipper young girl we met in Myst IV. In terms of story incongruities, she should totally remember you--the friend who hung out with her for a while, and ultimately saved her from becoming body-snatched by Sirrus. Instead, she's gone full-blown mystic, with face tattoos . No more "Dream"--now it's all about being The Grower, whatever that means. I found her journals incredibly frustrating to read--an attempt to be poetic that came across as convoluted and intentionally vague. They're full of nonsense about growers and the D'Ni, but none of it makes much sense unless you've read the books (or the Wiki, let's be real, here). Besides, you already know that the tablet is basically like the Arc of the Covenant in Indiana Jones (everyone wants it, but it's baaaaad. Got it).Things pick up, however, when you meet Escher. There are echos of Myst III: Exile (an underrated game in the series, if you ask me!). Here we have another mysterious character who needs your help. His periodic appearances do liven things up, and the voice acting is quite good. He isn't as likeable as Saavedro, however. With Saavedro, you totally understood why he was irate and out for revenge (he is abandoned for TWENTY YEARS on the Age of the person who destroyed everything he loves & left him to die...so, yeah, irate). With Escher, you get some cool insights: he is very keen on power, and I quite liked the "sketches" of autopsies done on the Bahro (that's when you really know that he's not the nicest dude, even though the ominous music that pipes up every time he appears does that job pretty well). As a character, though, he's pretty much one-dimensional (he wants the tablet/D'Ni power, and is helping you because you can get it for him). We never learn any back story, such as how he knows so much about the lost D'Ni civilization. Speaking to that, it's also totally unclear what happened to the D'Ni, although we can clearly see echoes of the fall of Rome (the amphitheater that Escher tells you was for some kind of bloody conquest). Again, if you don't read the books, you're pretty much clueless about what caused that empire to collapse, or where the Bahro came from (were they predecessors to the D'Ni? Were they enslaved by them? What's with the "tree," man? So. many. unanswered. questions). In terms of gameplay, however, you can really see improvements in the graphics. I always loved the way the sun rises and sets, and the water moves, in later Myst games (and games in general). The movement is still stilted, and the choice to use graphics rather than FMV was a poor one (they just look really, really weird, amiright?). But the worlds are beautiful to navigate. The puzzles were all quite challenging, but some of the best, logical puzzles of the Myst series. The puzzles made sense, and there were enough clues (from Escher, and lying around) that you never got stuck for long. You could easily get through this game without cheating/looking at a walkthrough, which was not the case with some of the earlier installments. So then we get to the "happy" ending--apparently, Yeesha is now "The Grower," but we have no sense of how that is going to somehow bring back the D'Ni civilization (um, don't you need people for that?), or what the tree has to do with Writing Ages. In past installments the "power" was all the D'Ni language--the ability to "write" Ages. Here, there's just this vague mysticism surrounding a tree/a grower, which I guess we're supposed to take on faith (ha) that it will somehow renew the civilization and "grow." Okay, sure. Despite the problems with the story, however, this is a fun game, and a solid addition to the Myst canon. It's worth playing for the challenging puzzles and beautiful visuals. Just don't ask too many questions about why characters do what they do, like I do.. This game is 95% unskippable cinematics and character exposition.. I honestly never got past the first few rooms. The original MYST series was the first virtual games I had ever played. This was has a dizzying fish-eye lense type of view, and it's rather frustrating to move around in. I'd be more immersed in the game play and riddle solving if it weren't for the ever-present distrations.. sound corrupts over time. difficult to overwrite at steam software.. Wow. Definitely the worst Myst game in my opinion. Right from the start you notice the LACK of detail that was so rich in all of the other games. A couple of the ages you visit are nicely done, but man, that last one is just so awful. Cheap. It looks cheap. While the voice acting is generally good, the animated characters are poorly constructed and badly animated. I suppose you should play URU before playing this game, but I couldn't even get into URU... so maybe that's the worst Myst game... Anyway, the puzzles are just OK. The story is... I don't know... why? Why should we care? Not recommended.. Honestly, this game was a real let down. I played Myst and Riven when I was a kid, so they were kind of my childhood games. I also played Exile and Revelations. I expected this one to be the same, but the graphics just got worse (which is just...really sad to me), and I beat the game in a few hours. It should not have been that easy. I just feel that this game just did not meet my expectations at all.. I played the original Myst way way back in the day. Playing Riven after that but never finished it, with all of it's discs! This game really brought me back to the OG Myst.. This is a great game, but the story is cheesy to the point of being cringeworthy. This may be a big disappointment to Myst fans seeing as the previous games (Especially Riven) are very grounded and masters at storytelling through gameplay. But don't let that hold you back from enjoying what is otherwise a properly clever game. The story revolves around a mad scientist and a hippie who battles for control over an all powerfull object (yeah, it's that dumb). The scientist is pretty cool as a character, although he is a bit over the top at times and nowhere near the trilling genius of Ghen (the scientist psychopath from Riven). The hippie however is cringeworthy and spews bad methaphors in an attempt at wisdom. Unless you enjoy that sort of thing it will take away some of your enjoyment. But credit where credit is due: The solution to the final puzzle that wraps up the story is actually pretty clever and ties nicely into the gameplay. The pace is good and you spend most of your time in this game actualy playing it and making progress (not watching cutscenes like most adventure games).Other than a dissapointing story the rest of the game is pure joy. The visuals and atmosphere are AMAZING (even today). The game runs perfect on modern systems and has almost no bugs. Music is also good but not at the level of some of the other games in the series. The game is easy to play and works great both as a point&click and as a free moving FPS (choice is yours). The puzzles are the main star and they are as good as ever. Many of them are really clever and will make you feel like a god when you solve them. They tie nicely into the game-world and helps build up that mysterious lonely atmosphere that Myst is known for. All of them are both interesting and fair, there is not a single "bad seed" that relies on stupid game-logic or pixel-hunting. As always with Myst games the puzzles expects you to examine and undertsand the environment in which they are located and what the purpose of the machinery you are manipulating actually is. You must look past just the interactive objects and study the world as a whole to make sense of it all. Simple logic or "trying everything" will not get you anywhere. Just look past the horrible story/writing and have fun, gameplay is stellar here. Patch update 1.0.1: Patch update 1.0.1 Fixed a bug that caused the laser turret to be not destroyed. Fixed the 'running stop' animation Changed the colors of some of the UI headings to make it more readable.. Myst 25th Anniversary Update: Thank you for your patience while we were getting this minor update for Myst V: End of Ages ready for Steam. Thanks too for your support of our games. We have been working to ready all of the games in the Myst series for the 25th Anniversary of Myst, which happens later this month. Most of the games in the series required compatibility updates, but Myst V did not - it runs quite nicely on Windows 10! We do have a few notes for you though. As a reminder, if you have something you would like to report regarding Myst V, please contact us directly at support@cyan.com. We would be happy to assist you.Thank you!The Cyan Worlds TeamRelease notes:Added original user manuals for English, French, German, Italian, and French.Known Issues:The tablet can appear on-screen during some cut-scenesIn rare cases, the Bahro will become frozen trying to interact with the tablet. This requires the game to be closed and restarted.Note regarding Conexant audio devices: If you are a Windows 10 user and are experiencing problems with your audio device, you may need to contact Conexant for updated drivers.. Early-Access & Multiplayer: Hi Everyone! PUNK-EX will be planning to launch in Early-Access on November 2nd 2018. That's the current decision I am going for even though this might change. But right now, this is the direction for the Steam release. About Multiplayer PUNK-EX already has a PVP mode but it will take time to finalize it. Currently I am removing the 'Multiplayer' label on the game until it is 100% confirmed that the game has multiplayer mode.I am going to focus more on the Single-player aspect of the game before going into developing multiplayer. So whether or not the game will have multiplayer mode is still unknown. If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask! Thanks. "Space Ironman" PUNK-EX Early-access Launched!: Hi everyone!, PUNK-EX has now launched on early-access Steam. During this phrase, I will be continuous improving on the game as well as listening to any feedback from players.Feeling very excited and uncertain as this is my first early-access release as well as my first steam game releases. The game is currently 85-90% playable but there will be some bugs that I missed fixing. Please post any bug issues Steam discussion forums if you encounter any bugs.Have fun!. 'Starboost EX' new title: The game's title is going to be renamed as 'Starboost EX' but I am still waiting for Steam's approval. They may reject the new name but the game is still the same. If you bought the game and see the name as 'PUNK-EX', it is normal.Thanks. Coming Soon - 7 days?: PUNK-EX is going to be release on early-access very soon! In 7 days! The date is set on November 2nd but there's a small possibility of releasing it a few days later if I encounter some problem with the game. The game is 80% playable with the exception of the final missions. I will be listening to what players think of the game before moving forward with the rest of the game.I will be updating the Steam page with a new improved trailer tomorrow. Starboost EX Launched!: Today, Starboost EX launched out of Early-Access. I hope everyone can have fun with this game. It is a solo game project that heavily focus on 'flight' as the core mechanics of the game. Thanks!
